Have you noticed moccasins showing up on store shelves for your kiddos little tiny feet? They’re all the rage this fall, and I’m so glad, because they’re one of my favorite wardrobe items for my little. I bought Hattie’s first pair of moccasins when she was just over a year old, and she wore her precious footprint onto the sole, where it’ll sit forever. I cherish those moccs, and I look back at that little footprint so often! She’s had pairs every size since then, and still wears her cherry red moccasins to run around the shop helping her daddy look for tools, or through the grocery store aisle with me,excited to pick out the bananas! Todd Anthony’s crib moccasins were the only shoes he wore as a newborn, and they were so tiny!! My baby fever starts to kick in every time I pick them up out of the drawer to peek at for memories sake! He’s grown with a pair of moccasins by his side too, and admittedly, they are the only shoes in his drawer at the moment! The moral of the story here: I adore our moccasins.
But not just any moccasins. You see, I’m huge on integrity. and principle. I remember following Susan Peterson along on her journey (the owner of Freshly Picked) and feeling so inspired by her! I remember watching her bravely take on the Shark Tank panel, and SUCCEED! I remember shedding a tear of two as I thought about her breaking glass out of her brother’s donated window panes to pay for the leather for her first batch of shoes.
I was raised by hardworking people, I’m married to a hardworking man, and I value the hardworking men and women that pioneer a product or a service in today’s economy. I don’t mind paying for quality, I’ll even budget for it when it’s something I value. I knew from day 1 that Susan’s moccasins would be a hit, and can remember two years ago visiting a local boutique and responding to the worker’s awe over Hattie’s tiny moccasins with a promise that they (or a version of them) would be on her store’s shelves once the trend took over. I see versions of Susan’s moccasins all over the place now, from that local boutique to the shelves at Old Navy, but I will forever be loyal to my Freshly Picked brand, because I value the work ethic that the company was founded upon, and stands beside. Every time I slip these shoes on my kiddos feet I remember carving little by little out of our newly married and parenting budget month after month until we could afford Hattie’s first pair. I know the quality of the genuine leather will stand up to the “Hattiest” of beatings, through wet grass, damp hay, chicken coop dirt, and shop scraps. Our moccasins are lived in, and loved, and that’s exactly why Susan created them in the first place.
I’ve taken my “integrity in purchases” standard seriously this holiday, and have vowed to make at least 90% of my gift giving something from a small business or handmade shop, because true craftsmanship is hard to come by. Genuineness is hard to come by, but when you find it you savor it. And because sometimes, you just have to do things on principle. I’ll be sharing some of my top picks soon in a “holiday gift guide”.
