A new baby is like the beginning of all things-wonder, hope, a dream of possibilities. -Eda Leshan
Isn’t it true though? Babies bring such a “fresh start + new perspective” feeling right along with them into your arms. How many of you adapted to a more holistic lifestyle once you became a mom? Or a grandmother? Probably a good bit of you. We evolve into a more selfless way of thinking, one that simplifies, protects, nourishes- we want natural, safe, pure; we want empowerment.
I so hope you enjoyed our newborn broadcast, and thank you all for being so kind and bearing with me through the sleep deprived presenting that I’ve started to do! In case you missed the live session, you can catch the replays either on Periscope @joleighblonde, via my Facebook page or in my video archives on Vimeo.
To recap, we discussed how less is more when it comes to babies. We don’t need to fall into the trap of believing that our tiny new babes need a slew of products slathered onto their bodies. These products, unless carefully purchased, contain ingredients and fragrances that can act as endocrine disrupters, increase their toxic load, and potentially act as an allergen or irritant to their delicate skin! Your creams, wipes, diapers, lotions, bath wash, and anything else touching their skin should be quality products with clean ingredients. Visit the newborn area of my Amazon shop for suggestions on what I use and love! The Environmental Workers Group (EWG) has a wonderful app called “Skin Deep” that you can use to scan or search for products to view their toxicity levels. It’s a great tool as you begin to clean up your bathroom and nursery!
Now that we’ve covered products, let’s discuss what we do when our tiny tot needs assistance in one way or another. Remember that you have options, you are the parent, you are allowed to ask questions in order to make an informed decision. Choose a pediatrician who will respect your choice to thoroughly think through decisions regarding your child, and will patiently give you the proper information you need to do so. Alternative and complementary therapies (the holistic options) are becoming part of a consumer led revolution. Let your money (what you’re buying), your choices, and your mindset help fuel this movement!
Here are a few of the non-invasive changes you can make in your nursery or around baby:
use a cool mist humidifier wherever baby is sleeping anytime the heater is on in the house, or baby is congested or rattling in the chest. This vaporized water can make a world of difference in preventing illnesses, and alleviating discomfort when illness does strike. Choose cool mist to keep bacteria from setting up shop in your humidifier and clean it regularly!
This is a “plug it in and forget about it” tool that will be your best friend in helping to rid the air of pathogens, pollutants, airborne pollens, dust particles, and more. Air quality is so vital to help our lungs to thrive, I love the small outlet one that I have in my Amazon shop, as well as any larger one that has a HEPA or permanent filter.
Let mother nature work in your favor! Buy yourself an indoor plant that you can put on a shelf in the nursery for beautiful organic vibe, as well as to use as an air cleanser! Plants rid the air of VOCs that leak from things like mattresses, furniture, carpets, rugs, etc. Here is a list of some of the most commonly used plants in a nursery to help you make your selection the next time you are purchasing some beauties for your own home!
I mentioned in the broadcast that using oils safely on newborn was a huge goal of mine in my initial days of education. I worked back and forth with a very experienced aromatherapist who let me know that first and foremost, babies should not be treated like small adults, they are unique little beings with their own categories of oils that work best for varying scenarios. For this reason, I created a line of blends that I affectionately refer to as my “little line”. I’ve never released it as a free download before, but I think you’ll truly benefit from it, so here is the high quality download!
I have a small list of oils that I consider my most valuable players in the nursery. I like to keep these in the room round the clock, and the list is small enough that you can double up without breaking the bank!
Diffusing for Immune Support
This aromatherapist was also very adamant that the best way to support a healthy immune system in a baby (and anyone) is to diffuse daily, primarily a conifer + citrus. This combo not only smells lovely, but it’s super mild and gentle so you never have to worry about irritating those tiny little lungs. Here are some of my favorites to rotate throughout the week!
Where to apply when used topically?
we use oils on the belly for digestive support, chest and back for respiratory support, feet and spine for cellular support, and on a blanket, pacifier clip, on mama’s chest, or on a lovey for emotional support and calming!
Now here’s a few of my favorite baby blends. Some are for a rollerbottle, others are for a diffuser, avenues of use will be noted in recipe title!
For when mama just needs some extra energy! Spearmint in a great alternative to peppermint in the early days when we are taking care not to overwhelm those tiny lungs!
A lovely smelling “night night” blend of oils that’s just as calming as it is sedating
My favorite way to handle up on that dreaded baby bark! This + a humidifier = magic
The best recipe for cellular support for your newborn! Welcomes them to this world with a great vibrational energy and immune boosting properties.
Here’s a few extra tips (above) for common newborn issues that might arise!
My biggest tips for you?
don’t overthink it, dilute, keep it simple, maintain a minimal approach!
I love printing them onto Avery Postcard templates found in my Amazon Shop!
